Volunteering in sport matters. However, clubs have never been more desperate to find them. In this post we will show you the FIVE Essential Steps To Maximise The Effectiveness Of Your Volunteer Recruitment.
Webinars, Seminars, and Generic Content is not enough
One solution to boosting volunteers is the traditional volunteer recruitment webinar. Typically this might involve a snapshot of the research on volunteering, and some suggestions on what clubs might do to recruit more volunteers. However, for many clubs, this intervention rarely has a significant impact on a their volunteer numbers. This is because seminars are an incomplete solution that only address, (if they are good), one small part of the volunteer recruitment process.
Volunteer Recruitment is a multi-step process
To create interventions that actually result in MORE volunteers we need to use some ‘process logic’ about all the steps a club leader must execute to recruit volunteers. Then, we need to analyse each of those steps and figure out which ones our club leaders will need help with to execute their volunteer recruitment strategy proficiently.
Here are the five steps we have identified:

Step 1: Select the exact jobs you need filled
First, a club needs to be really clear on what jobs they want to recruit for. This is important because you don’t want volunteers who are just ‘seat fillers’ – you want volunteers to take on an agreed chunk of the workload (so that you don’t have to do it anymore).
Step 2: Unearth recruitment barriers for your club
Then, we unearth the specific barriers to volunteer recruitment in your club. I don’t know about you, but I wouldn’t take my car to a mechanic who didn’t properly diagnose what is broken. My doing this step, you can avoid wasting hours of your time trying to implement recruitment strategies that aren’t the right ‘fix’ for your situation.
Step 3: Identify prospective volunteers
The third step in our volunteer recruitment system is to identify prospective volunteers. Over the years we have learnt that there are certain groups of people who are more likely to take on certain roles. So we use our expertise to minimise the time it takes to recruit volunteers.
Step 4: Select your specific recruitment strategy
Fourth, we select your specific recruitment strategy. A targeted strategy that is specifically chosen for your club is much better than a generic list of 10 things you can try. This is because volunteers don’t have the time or the bandwidth for trial and error of strategies that were never suitable for your club.
Step 5: Implement your recruitment system
Finally, we’ll help you implement your strategy so that you can immediately start recruiting new volunteers. Why does this matter? Because ‘knowing’ how to recruit volunteers isn’t enough – you have to actually do it! Which is why we’ll give you some time-saving solutions so that this last step gets done.
Conclusion
As you can see, you can’t just go to a seminar and expect volunteers will magically appear one day. It takes a step-by-step approach.
